SHOULD WIFE ALWAYS SUBMIT TO THEIR HUSBAND: A SEQUEL

This is my first time to write an entry article for Marriage Monday, My friend Nice A of Nice Thoughts and Thrills has prodded me to join, I cannot say no so finally it’s here. Since she’s my persuader I am writing a sequel of her topic ‘Should Wife Always Submit To Their Husband?’

On a philosophical mode, this question will rake varied answers because not all wives are positioned on the same plane, meaning we maybe the same married woman, but each woman’s circumstances and the way how each wife see reality vary from where they are positioned in society.

From the Christian perspective, it is emphasized via the Bible that wives should be subservient towards their husband as supported by these verses:

• Titus 2:4-5 – Sober and obedient
• Colossians 3:18 – submissive to their husbands
• 1 Corinthians 11:3 – accept men as their authority figure

From the wives with a feminist point of view, this idea is absurd as feminist find women in the disadvantage side and that religious dogma has boxed wives (generally women) and dispossessed them of equal freedom with their husband.

On the other hand modern day wives would think, why submit to my husband when I earn more than my husband is earning? Others thought it would be just about mutual respect and reciprocity.

On a personal level, I don’t think wives should (always) submit to their husband, I find the word submission so repressive. I don’t mean to demean this doctrine, I just don’t subscribe to the idea of surrender. I have been married for twelve years now and I can’t think of any circumstance where I find myself submissive. I think the idea of reciprocity worked well for us. I also thought if both husband and wife knew the concepts of gender equality given religion, culture, social and etc. factors, and men should do away with the ‘macho’ image , this, to me I think would be a leveling ground for reciprocity.

But on a more bigger picture, the idea of submissiveness of wives to their husband still persist and will continue to persist and to live whether we like it or not so long as there are those who faithfully believe in the Christian dogma.
