In a world where most bathrooms are lit by fluorescent lighting, our reflection can sometimes cast a bit of a downer. Even if green-tint bulbs aren’t to blame, other factors such as dehydration, lack of sleep and hangovers are all culprits for making us look washed out and tired. However, there are a few tips and tricks to not only superficially plump up the eye area, but longer-lasting ways of giving us a brighter, healthier look.
Hydrating creams
You might be surprised to know that part of the cause of dark under-eyes is dehydration. Dehydrated skin occurs when your skin struggles to retain the water moisture within it, creating an ashen or thin looking appearance, which can also be seen in dark circles. Going to your local chemist or drug store and having a hunt through creams that have ingredients such as glycerin and aloe vera is a good place to start.
Concealer
Even if you’re not a heavy makeup wearer, your options aren’t limited when it comes to brightening up the eye area. Completing your usual moisturizing routine (complete with hydrating under-eye cream) and dabbing a bit of concealer or full-coverage foundation in your inner-corner eye area will immediately lift the eye area. Preferably, a concealer that’s a shade lighter than your skin tone will work better with this effect.
Doe-eyed makeup
If your under-eye area is particularly gray, and you’re prone to getting mascara smudges or accidentally running your eyeliner – just stick to the upper lid. By focusing your eye makeup on the top lid, this creates an opening-out effect. Winged eyeliner or a light wash of eye shadow will help to give you that doe-eyed effect. Even if you’d prefer just to use mascara, brushing out the top eyelashes will give your face a feathery and framed makeup look.
Botox
This treatment has come a long way from where it first began. It’s very likely you’ll have heard a little bit about what it does, but many might be too shy to ask “what is Botox exactly?” Initially used to treat a muscular disorder, it temporarily paralyzes the muscles underneath the skin area. It’s now used to treat common problems that can leave the eye area with loose skin and wrinkles. The overall effect around the eye area after treatment is smoother and more youthful-looking in appearance.
Face massage
Another reason for dark circles that you might be surprised by is poor circulation. We’re all constantly told to get enough sleep and drink enough water, but realistically our social lives and work lives can sometimes prevent us from getting the desired eight hours. Massaging around the eye area increases blood flow around the eye area, and leaves it looking plumper and healthier. By choosing your favorite face oil or creamy face mask, it’s an easy and therapeutic way to treat yourself in the morning or night time.
There’s nothing that makes you feel less glamorous when going into work than feeling like you look tired, and you have the dark shadows to show it. However, whether it’s a short or long-term problem, there are ways of counteracting the issue that will leave you looking a bit perkier, even if you don’t feel it.
